Kitchens that survive the tropics

Humidity, salt air and heat are hard on a kitchen. Here is how we choose materials and joinery that still look right after ten Surinamese summers.

Kitchen,Bathroom, Closet & Laundry room Setup

A kitchen in Paramaribo lives a harder life than one in a temperate climate. The air carries moisture year round, the temperature swings little but stays high, and near the coast there is salt in the breeze. Fronts that were specified for a European catalogue can swell, delaminate or dull within a couple of seasons.

Start with the carcass

We build carcasses from moisture-resistant board and seal every cut edge, because the edge is where humidity gets in. It is invisible once the kitchen is installed, which is exactly why it is the first thing to compromise on a budget and the first thing to fail.

Fronts and finishes

For fronts we lean on materials that do not mind water: through-coloured laminates, lacquered surfaces that are properly cured, and real timber only where it can be maintained. Each has a place, and the right answer depends on how the family actually cooks.

  • Matte lacquer for a calm, seamless look that hides fingerprints in a busy household.

  • Compact laminate for wet zones and outdoor kitchens, where it shrugs off rain and scrubbing.

  • Veneered timber for the pieces you want to feel warm, kept away from the sink run.

The test is not how a kitchen photographs on the day it is installed. It is how it looks after ten summers of daily use.

Hardware earns its keep

Hinges and runners are where a tropical kitchen is quietly won or lost. We fit corrosion-resistant hardware from Blum throughout, because a drawer that has stopped closing softly is the first thing a client notices, and the most expensive thing to retrofit.
